My journey coaching individuals with ADHD, Asperger’s and other learning challenges is a very personal one. As an adult, I was diagnosed with ADHD and have experienced the positive and challenging aspects of ADHD in my own family. I know that the positive aspects of ADHD outnumber the challenging ones.
I am currently an Expressive and Creative Arts Psychotherapist and Professional Co-Active Health Coach. I began AttentionB to help individuals of all ages with the challenges of ADHD, Asperger’s and Learning Disorders, including focus and attention, as well as memory disorders such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. I perform these services as owner of AttentionB.
Throughout the last 30 years, I have been an instructor and college professor lecturing to teachers on physical education, special education: learning disabilities, ADHD, Asperger’s, and therapy through expression, creativity and movement. I have written extensively about Body Language and Non-Verbal Communication as a tool to enhance the teaching and learning processes. This has served me well in coaching children with ADHD, Asperger’s and Learning Disabilities (and their parents), resulting in breakthroughs and ultimately a higher quality of life.
My background has given me the opportunity to work with many different groups of children, teens and adults in a variety of environments.
What led me to my career choices? As a child, I was quite active and became interested in gymnastics. By my teenage years, I was coaching gymnastics, basketball and swimming. This led to my first career choice as a Physical Education teacher, specializing in early childhood physical development and creative movement for children with special needs.
For my M.A. in Expressive Arts and Movement Psychotherapy, I delved into how emotions affect our bodies. My thesis dealt with Transforming Body Image in Eating Disorders.
When earning my Ph.D. in Education (majoring in Social Sciences) with an emphasis on Pedagogy and Teaching, my dissertation focused on The Social/Cultural Construction of Female Physical Education Teachers in Training. In this, I utilized frameworks from education, psychology, anthropology, sociology and gender studies as a post-modern study of women in traditional cultures. I am also credentialed in Academic Pedagogical Management and am licensed in Mediation and Conflict Resolution.
My training as a coach was completed at ‘The Coaches Training Institute’ (CTI), and The Health Coach University. I am currently serving on the board of the ICF-International Coach Federation in Los Angeles. I am also facilitator of the support group for CHADD SFV in California.
I taught the next generation of teachers the skills and knowledge for working with students with ADHD, Asperger’s and other learning challenges.
As founder and manager of “Physical”, a holistic health clinic for women, I focused on wellness, nutrition, sports and therapy. I emphasized women’s physical, mental and spiritual health. As a licensed dietician and workout specialist, I dealt with women’s eating disorders, and the holistic paradigm for women to work with their body and not against it.
Identifying creative and innovative ways to overcome challenges and reach goals has been my primary source of motivation throughout my career. My commitment to a higher quality of life for people of all ages that experience learning challenges continues to grow and motivate me each day. Through my study and life work, I know that coaching, which focuses on an individual’s strengths, makes a big difference. It is for this reason that I chose to become a Co-Active Life coach, specializing in Expressive and Creative Arts Psychotherapy for ADHD, Asperger’s, Learning Disabilities, Memory disorders such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease after retiring from the Ministry of Education. |
